What is the definition of an at risk adult?
Person >18 who is maybe in need of community care service and may be unable to take care of themselves and protect themselves from exploitation
What defines an at risk adult?
18+ and: Living residential accommodation/ sheltered housing Receive domiciliary care In prison Contact w/ probation service Receive welfare support Receiving support Expectant or nursing mothers in residential care
Types of abuse?
Physical, sexual, psychological, financial, neglect
What groups are at risk?
Lacking mental capacity Severe physical impairment Sensory impairment Comatosed Aphasia
What factors make people at risk?
Compliant on service/ practitioner
No support network
Social isolation
Unable to communicate
What are the 7 indicators of abuse?
- Physical

What people may have poorer oral health?
Homeless people - no permanent address of register
People w/ learning difficulties
How to help people who you suspect abuse of a pt?
Create a space for person to talk
If disclose - listen don’t judge
Address immediate safety issues
If don’t want to take immediate action - signpost them
What to do is you suspect domestic abuse?
If not disclosed
- If suspicions raised it is important that act on them
- Ensure privacy
- Show person you have time to listen
If disclosed
- Seek to empower victim
