Chemotherapy patient, explain need to make them dentally fit and what things i might do to ensure this
Dentally fit needed to minimise risk of infection during chemotherapy when you are largely immunocompromised
- chemo puts toll on body, even the mouth
- whole aim of this is to reduce complications with chemo
Involves
- removing any active disease / decay
- removing hopeless teeth
- thoroughly improving oral hygiene measures
- full mouth scaling
- soft splint
- shave down sharp teeth
- high fluoride toothpaste
- fluoride trays / mouthwash
- diet advice to reduce sugar intake
Complications that may arise during chemo
- mucositis - benzydamine spray or mouth rinse, stop smoking, avoid spicy foods etc
- minimal intervention unless emergency
Post treatment
- dry mouth management with saliva replacement / info on water sips / sugar free chewing gum
- recovery period of years if taste affected, will not return to normal same with saliva function
- possible dysphagia
- increased risk of decay and periodontal disease
Carry out BLS for a baby

- 15 compressions 2 breaths
- 120bpm
- use thumbs to do chest compressions
