Spec Definitions Flashcards
Relative Isotopic Mass
The mass of an isotope compared with one-twelfth of the mass of an atom of carbon-12.
Relative Atomic Mass
The weighted mean mass of an atom of an element compared with one-twelfth of the mass of an atom of carbon-12.
First Ionisation Energy
The energy required to remove one electron from each atom in one mole of gaseous atoms of an element to form one mole of gaseous 1+ ions.
Enthalpy Changes of Formation
When 1 mole of a compound is formed from its elements in their standard state under standard conditions.
Enthalpy Changes of Combustion
When 1 mole of a substance reacts completely with oxygen under standard conditions, with all reactants and products in their standard state.
Enthalpy Change of Neutralisation
The reaction of an acid by a base to form one mole of H2O under standard conditions, with all reactants and products in their standard state.
Homologous Series
A series of organic compounds with the same functional group but with each successive number differing by CH3.
Lattice Enthalpy
Enthalpy change that accompanies the formation of one mole of an ionic compound from its gaseous ions under standard conditions.
Enthalpy Change of Solution
Enthalpy change that takes place when one mole of a compound is completely dissolved in H2O under standard conditions.
Enthalpy Change of Hydration
Enthalpy change when one mole of isolated gaseous ions is dissolved in H2O forming 1 mole of aqueous ions under standard conditions.
Stereoisomerism
Compounds with the same structural formula but with a different arrangement of atoms in space.
