Q

Recall the various labs Melinda and David complete together in Bio? What did they force Melinda to do?

A

She was forced to dissect a frog, and cut an apple.

While dissecting the frog, Melinda was reminded of when she was at the party, and she was pinned to the ground, not being able to speak or do anything to protect herself, just like the frog.

When the class was cutting apples, she was reminded of happy times when she was just a young girl at an apple orchard

Q

What is the root cause of Melinda’s suffering mental health? Why won’t she open her mouth and talk?

A

The root cause of Melinda’s suffering in mental health is her inability to express herself and feelings. She can not find herself after a traumatizing experience and is held back as she can not move forward. Melinda will not talk due to how she think she will be judged and has fear or what might happen. Finally, she does not have anyone to talk to as her world is crumbling and people will not believe her.-S.A

Q

What is the difference between a symbol and a motif?

A

A motif is an element or idea that appears repeatedly throughout a work of writing, as opposed to a symbol, which may only appear once to represent an idea or an emotion. Although it is closely tied to a theme, it serves more as the theme’s supporting cast than as the theme itself.

Q

the turkey-bone sculpture

A

The corpse of the turkey represents Melinda, who has recently gone through a great lot of suffering (much like the turkey must have felt while her parents were trying to cook it). Melinda feels as though the raw, exposed turkey bones are now.

Q

“This closet is abandoned—it has no purpose, no name. It is the perfect place for me.” Why do you think Melinda feels this way?

A

Melinda feels this way because she believes the closet resonates well with her current predicament. The school has abandoned both Melinda and the janitor’s closet. After calling the cops at the party, Melinda is looked down upon in the school as an “outcast” and a “snitch.”

Consequently, she has lost almost all of her relationships. Her friends refuse to talk to her, and a few, like Rachel, have developed a fierce animosity with her. This conflict is apparent when she directly mouthed “I hate you” (5) at Melinda early on in the novel.

She can be left alone in this environment and nurture her desire to be alone.
