SPE - SLT Flashcards

1
Q

What is Social learning theory ?

A

A way of explaining behaviour that includes direct and indirect reinforcement, combining learning theory with the role of cognitive factors.

Q

What did bandura say about aggression in SLT ?

A

Bandura acknowledged that aggression can be learned directly through operant conditioning involving positive and negative reinforcement and punishment.

Q

Eg . of operant conditioning in aggression ?

A

If a child who angrily snatches a toy off another child will learn that aggressive behaviour is rewarding. This direct reinforcement makes it more likely that the child will behave aggressively in a similar situation

Q

What else did bandura observe ?

A

Aggressive behaviour often cannot be explained by such direct forms of learning, especially in humans. He argues indirect learning mechanism : observational learning.

Q

What do children require when learning ?

A

Observational learning - acquire specific aggressive behaviours through observing aggressive models such as ; siblings, parents, peers.

6
Q

What do children learn through observing aggressive models ?

A

They learn about aggressive behaviour but this does not mean they will behave aggressively themselves. They also learn the consequences of their behaviour

7
Q

What is vicarious reinforcement ? (aggression)

A

If the models aggressive behaviour is rewarded then the child learns that aggression can be effective in getting what they want.
-> This makes it more likely that the observing child is more likely to imitate the models aggressive behaviour.

Q

What is the parallel form of vicarious reinforcement ?

A

Vicarious punishment : if aggression is used to achieve a goal = punished. They are less likely to imitate behaviour.

Q

Eg . of self efficacy :

A

‘A child hits other children to get a hold of a toy’
The child’s confidence in their ability to get aggressive grows as they learn that aggression can bring rewards

Q

What does the child learn about self- efficacy ?

A

-That they have the motor skills necessary to force another child to hand over the toy , this ability comes easily to them.
-The child’s sense of self-efficacy becomes easily to them ; they become confident because s it has been effective in the past. (They learn aggression works and they are good with it )
