Spatial Resolution Flashcards
What is spatial resolution?
The sharpness of the structural edges recorded in an image
What does spatial resolution allow you to distinguish?
Two objects that are in close proximity to each other
How is spatial resolution lost in an image?
Through blur distoring the edges of the image and making them run into each other and through a loss of contrast
What is the technical name for blur?
Penumbra
What is unsharpness controlled by?
SOD, OID and focal spot size
How can the amount of penumbra be calculated?
Using the unsharpness penumbra formula
What is the unsharpness formula?
Penumbra = FS x OID/SOD
If a focal spot is 1.5 mm, OID is 30 cm and SOD is 60 cm what is the spread of penumbra?
Penumbra = 1.5 x 30/ 60 = 45/60 = 0.75
How can sharpness be measured?
By taking the ratio of SOD/OID
How is the relative sharpness measured between two exposures?
SOD/OID of exposure B divided by SOD/OID of exposure A
What physical device can be used to measeure sharpness?
Line pair tool
What factors affect the sharpness of an image?
Motion, geometry, focal spot size, size of detector elements, size of pixels
How does motion affect spatial resolution?
Less motion produces higher spatial resolution
How does SID affect spatial resolution?
Lower SID produces more magnification and less spatial resolution
How does focal spot size affect spatial resolution?
Smaller focal spot size increases spatial resolution
