Example 1

A

In Section A, Alice is positioned in front of the waves, while the other creatures are positioned behind, swimming through the waves. Travelling in a sidewards direction, Alice forms a gallop into a single pirouette, and extends her leg in an upwards direction. She then repeats this phrase again and shifts her direction to run backwards for a couple of steps. She finally shifts to travel forwards by performing little triplet gallops, while travelling on a diagonal line. The creatures are swimming in unison through the waves but Alice’s change in directions shows that she has been carried away and is no longer swimming in the same direction as the other creatures.

(3.37-3.40) – Focus

In Section C, the Dodo stands on the side of the stage near the wings, and Alice stands central. Using direct outwards focus, the Dodo watches Alice and angrily squawks at her whilst slowly backing off the stage. Alice slowly walks in a circle whilst maintaining indirect outwards focus. The other animals stand in the wings of the stage looking around quickly using outwards indirect focus. This movement example showcases the animal’s annoyance with Alice at her disruption of their nonsensical Caucus Race due to her being too sensible to partake in the race without rules.
