A

Very young children were brought up by nurses, not there mothers. Nurses did not spoil the children in their case. Spartan children were brought up to eat whatever simple food was put before them. They were told not to cry or to sulk, if they did they were ignored.

A

They were removed from their homes and put in barracks, until they were 30. In those barracks the boys were split up into ‘companies’, the ‘companies’ were then divided into platoons, who were controlled by ‘paidonomos’ ( wardens) , who could punish them if they misbehaved, to assist him he had a group of young men over the age of 18 ( they carried whips). The platoons were organised by prefects, who were older boys chosen by their courage and bravery

Q

What happened at the age of 12+ in their education?

A

The whole of their education got more tough and harsh,They had to sleep on beds made out of rushes which they picked themselves from the river edge.(They were hard to pick without cutting your hands, so they developed tough skin) They were given little food, which encouraged the children to steal. They even stole of estates! This was regarded as a valuable lesson, as it taught you to look after yourself
