• Religion (Protestant England and Catholic Spain). Phillip was previously marriesd to Mary 1 and wanted a return to catholisicm
• Eliza rejected Phillip om 1559.
  Building of England empire threatened Spainish trade.

Why was the Spanish Armada defeated. (3)

• Poor Leadership (Duke of Medina was seasick and had no experience compared to Francis Drake.
  -Invasion delayed a year as Drake attacked and sank ships of the coast of Cadiz. (caused them to rush repairs and as a result some of the ships leaked badly.)
  -Design of the Ships (Spanish ships are longer and heavier which makes them slow and difficult to manoeuvre.
  -Weather.
