spanish armada Flashcards
What was the Spanish Armada
The Spanish armada was a fleet of 151 ships sent by King Philip II to attack in England
Why did Philip send an Armada against England?
He was catholic and Elizabeth was a Protestant so he saw her as a heretic
Queen Elizabeth knighted Francis Drake who had constantly raided Philip’s towns and stole his gold
She also helped the Dutch rebel against the rules that were placed in the Netherlands by King Philip.
What happened in the Spanish armada
in 1588,
What was the Babington plot
The Babington Plot was a plan in 1586 to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I, a Protestant, and put Mary, Queen of Scots, her Catholic cousin, on the English throne.
What route was travelled in the Spanish armada
The Armada set sail from Lisbon on 28th May 1588, picking its way out of the Tagus River and working north up the Portuguese coast until it reached Corunna on the north west coast of Spain. The journey from Lisbon revealed the unwieldy nature of the Armada.
Reasons why the Spanish Armada failed
Spanish sailors didn’t have a map of the waters, they became too ill and were unprepared
The Spanish fought a defensive battle and fled at the sight of advancing British Ships
The Spanish boats were not built for the weather of England
