What is slavery?
Slavery is the act of owning someone and forcing them to work against their will in often poor conditions
What was the slave trade?
This was the act of buying and selling slaves across the Atlantic
How did the slave trade work?
Sailors from Britain, Portugal, Italy and Spain sailed to Africa and captured Africans. From there they sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and sold the Africans to plantation owners in America and the Caribbean. Then they took goods like cotton and tobacco back to Europe to sell.

Slaves were transported across the Atlantic Ocean

European traders traded manufactured goods with African chiefs in exchange for their people
Why was the transporting of slaves called the middle passage?
It was called this because it was the middle leg of a three-part voyage
