Speaker
Writer of the piece and what we do and don’t know about them. The text can have a particular meaning because of WHO/wrote/said it
Purpose
What the writer/speaker hopes to accomplish by writing/speaking the piece. What the writer/speaker wants the audience to believe, think, or do
Audience
The intended audience for the piece that the author choice. What the speaker assumes about their audience. This impacts what they say and how they say it
Context
What was going on in the world when the text was produced. The cultural/historical situation or social occasion of the piece
Exigence
Why the author feels compelled to address this subject at this time-why now. The spark or catalyst for speaking or writing
Choices
What moves the author makes and why Organization, diction, syntax, analogies, anecdotes, or other rhetorical choices impact the meaning and effect of the text
appeals
The choices of the speaker appeal to ethos, logos, and or pathos
Tone
What attitude the speaker conveys in the piece. The choices that help the audience convey that attitude. Does the attitude shift anymore in the piece—why?
