the USSR beat the Americans to it when it launched the satellite Sputnik and the USSR also sent a second larger satellite called Sputnik I into space. This time it carried a dog.

It was aimed to put a man on the moon and By July 1969 this was achieved.

The space race caused Cold War tension as in SA and USSR saw a nuclear war close which was harsher than reality. However during the end of the space race USA and ussr worked together to find space knowledge
