Space Flashcards
What is the order of the planets from closest to furthest?
Mercury,Venus,Earth,mars,Jupiter,Saturn,Uranus,Neptune
What is the Sun?
What is a planet?
What is a comet?
What is an asteroid?
Sun- star which is a hot ball of gas.
Planet- large ball of rock or gas that orbits a star.
Comet- lumps of ice and dust.
Asteroid- rocky metallic objects of different shapes and sizes.
Uses of satellites
Communications.
GPS.
Weather monitoring/forecast.
Astronomy.
What is a galaxy?
Huge collection of stars, gas and dust held together as a group by gravity.
Life of a star
1.Main sequence/star much bugger than the Sun.
2. Super red giant.
3. Supernova.
4. Black hole or neutron star.
How do we know that the universe is expanding?
If we examine light from distant galaxies the wavelengths that we measure are longer than expected.
This can only happen if the galaxy emitting the light is moving away from the observer.
What is CMBR?
Cosmic microwave background radiation.
Remnant or echo of the Big Bang.
What is red-shift?
If the wavelength of light stretches when coming from a moving source, we say that light has been red-shifted (because it has shifted to the red end of the electromagnetic spectrum) and it means that the source is moving away from us.
Why are we limited in space travel?
Flight times.
Engineering.
Logistics.
Ethical.
Cost.
What is a light year?
Unit of distance.
The distance that light can travel in a year.
How fast is the speed of light?
9.46 x 10 to the power of 12km
