Space Flashcards
what consists our solar system?
sun
eight planets+dwarf planets that orbit the sun
natural satellites eg moon that orbit planets
how was the sun formed?
a cloud of dust and gas (nebula) pulled together by gravitational tension
the life cycle of a star
Refer to diagram
how are elements heavier than iron produced?
in a supernova
how are elements distributed?
supernova - explosion of a massive star
how does gravity change the velocity of circular orbits but not their speed?
velocity is speed in a given direction
direction of object constantly changes=velocity constantly changes
why does the radius change if the speed changes?
speed increases=radius of orbit decreases
higher speed=greater force of gravity to prevent it flying off into space=closer to earth=gravitational force greater=stable orbit
what is red-shift?
The further away the galaxies, the faster they are moving and the bigger the observed increase in wavelength
theories about the universe
big bang -
steady state -
