Space Flashcards
What is an asteroid?
a small rocky body orbiting the sun
For a geostationary satellite what is the period of its orbit?
24 hours
same period as the earth’s rotation so it stays above the same place
If a satellite moves to a higher altitude orbit what happens to its period (how long it takes to orbit)
It increases
Name at least 2 uses of satellites
Any of these
* GPS,
* weather forecasting
* communications,
* space exploration (eg Hubble telescope, ISS).
What is the name for a small rocky body orbiting the sun?
An asteroid
What altitude (how high) does a geostationary satellite orbit?
36 000 km
What is the solar system?
The gravitationally bound system of the Sun and the objects that orbit it.
This includes the eight planets, asteroids, comets and meteroids
What is the value of g in W=mg?
Depends on the planet!
It’s on the data sheet. For earth it’s 9.8N/kg
What is meant by 1 light year?
The distance light can travel in 1 year
How would you calculate 1 light year?
Use d=vt
v= speed of light (3 x 10^8 m/s)
t=60x60x24x365.25 s
60 sec in 1 min, 60 min in 1 hour, 24 hr in 1 day 365.25 days in 1 year
What is meant by the term moon.
A natural satellite of a planet/
dwarf planet
What is the approximate age of the universe?
approximately
13.8 billion years old
