Soxial Influence Flashcards
What is aim of minority influence
Mosscovici aimed to test weather a minority group were more likely to influence a majority group by giving incorrect answers on a colour perception if they were consistent in their views
Minority procedure
Moscovici
172 female participants eyesight tested
Each test 6 people 4 participants 2 confederates
Presented 36 slides which were clearly different shades of blue and asked to state what colour they could see
2 confedrates said they saw green every time
Green 24
Blue 12
Minority findings and conclusions
Moscovici
Inconstant condition 1.25%
Consistent condition 8.42%
Control condition no confederates 0.25% wrong
Strength of minority influence
Well controlled
Labotory setting
Control extraneous variables
Positive high internal validity
Weakness of minority influence
Low ecological validity
Labotory experiment seen as artificial setting so not representative of real life
Problem because the findings may not be generalised to real life situations
Weakness of minority influence
High demand characteristics
Because the participants were awear they were involved in the study may result in them changing their behaviour
Problem because it lower internal validity
Weakness of minority influence
Deception
Deliberately misleading the participants by use of confederates and not telling them the correct aim of the study
Problem because it goes agains the ethical code of conduct
Weakness
Never hand brilmayer
Discusses the amount of compensation should be payed to someone after ski lift accident
Found when one confederate had no influence but when showed flexibility and compromising they did have an influence
Factors effecting minority influence
Consistency
Synchrony all saying the same
Diachronic saying the same thing for a long time
