Why did the Soviets invade Afghanistan? American reaction?
Brezhnev ordered a Soviet invasion of Afghanistan to help the communists retain control in Afghanistan. USA saw this as a clear act of aggression.
Why did the Soviets say they invaded Afghanistan for? What proved this wrong?
They claimed they had been invited by Amin to support his government against terrorist. However Amin was assassinated on 27th December and replaced by pro-soviet Babrak Kamal.
When did the Soviets invade Afghanistan?
24th December 1979.
How did America see the invasion to be?
America believed this was an example of the Soviets attempting to spread communism abroad.
How did President Carter react?
He went as far as to claim the invasion posed the biggest threat to world peace since the end of WW2. He withdrew SALT 2 and increased arms spending.
What was the olympic boycotts?
In protest to Afghanistan invasion, USA led a boycott of 1980 Olympic games which were held in Moscow. Over 69 nations supported the US boycott.
Leadership problems of USSR?
Brezhnev, Andropov and Chernenko died in quick succession between 1980- 85.
What did Reagan do towards the Soviets?
He had a tougher approach which led to periods of tense and hostile relations. Often referred to ‘Second cold war’
What was Reagans approach?
Described Soviets as ‘evil empire’
Boosted Americas armed forces. And announced Reagan Doctrine.
What was Reagans doctrine?
USA would support anti-communist governments and support anti-communist groups trying to overthrow communist governments.
