Please state the characteristics of the Southern Rhone.

A

Climate: Mediterranean with mild winters and warm dry summers where drought can be an issue.
Due to Mistral wind speed blowing in S Rhone Grenache is bushed trained low to ground to offer protection and to benefit from the warmth of the soil.
Best sites-very stony soils absorbing the heat and warm helping grapes to ripen.

State the black grape varieties used in S Rhone and their characteristics.

A

Grenache-dominates, most widely planted, concentrated spiced red fruit flavours, hot years can become baked and jammy.

Syrah-provides extra colour and tannin to blend, struggle in hot years.

Mourvèdre-deeply colored, very high tannins, black fruit flavors, gamey and meaty aromas, can ripe successfully at the northern limit.
Both Syrah and Mourvedre plays a supporting role for Grenache.

Cinsault-provides red fruit to red blend, blending partner with Grenache in fresh roses.
