The relief of an area describes?
Where the land is higher or lower, for example mountains (high) or valleys (low)
The height that a place is above sea level is described as its
altitude
There are 3 main relief areas in SA, what are they
Coastal plain (0-500 m); plateau (500 m altitude); Escarpment is where the land rises steeply between the coastal plain and the plateau (mainly mountain ranges)
If you see a map from the side and it is cut through like a cake, what is it called?

Plateau describes
The high flatter area in the interior of the country.
Coastal plain describes
Slightly higher than the coastline
Escarpment describes
Where the land rises steeply between the coastal plain and the plateau. It is mainly mountain ranges.
