The Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act

Prohibited marriages between whites and non-whites

All South Africans had to be registered with the state and classified by race
Options: White, coloured, Black, (later) Indian
People could apply for reclassification

1950
Residential and business districts of towns were zoned for specific ethnic groups to live or work in
Made it illegal for ‘wrong’ groups to live in particular districts
The Bantu Authorities Act / creation of reserves
1951
Established ‘self-determination’ for Blacks in designated areas called reserves/homelands/Bantustans
Covered 13% of South Africa land for 70% of the population to live in
The Abolition of Passes Act / pass books
1952
Abolished various regional and local pass systems, replaced with ‘pass books’ - national system
Blacks had to carry them in ‘white’ areas; failure to produce a correct/up to date pass book could result in immediate arrest
Keeping pass book up to date required frequent and lengthy government office visits
The Bantu Education Act
1953
Set up a completely separate education system for Blacks
Black schools received less funding (7x less per child in 1953)
Black children were taught subjects that prepared them for unskilled jobs
The Separate Amenities Act
1953
Enabled towns to reserve public premises, vehicles and services for the use of a particular ethnic group
Separate parks, beaches, post offices, transport, cinemas etc.
Non-segregated areas: Roads, streets (and Johannesburg Zoo for some reason)
