continuous - as long as communicators are in each others presence
main channel for conveying attitudes emotion and effect
congruent - NVC more powerful and more likely to be listened to than the VC if they don’t match
demonstrate attentiveness to the patient and fascilitate formation of a helping relationship
disparity in power between dr and pt means they listen attentively to NVC
