Sources of Light Flashcards
What is the nature of light?
Light is one of the several forms of Energy that reaches us from the sun.
What is the Electromagnetic Spectrum?
The arrangement of all electromagnetic waves according to wavelength/frequency.
What is high energy associated with?
Short wavelength.
What is low energy associated with?
Long wavelength.
What is visible light?
Any electromagnetic wave that our eyes can see.
How many colours can visible light be separated into?
Many. E.g. red, orange, yellow, etc.
What is visible spectrum?
The continuous sequence of colours that form visible white light together.
What is a luminous object?
Object that gives off its own light.
What is an example of a luminous object?
Sun.
What are artificial sources?
They produce light by converting other forms of energy to light.
What are examples of artificial sources?
Chemical, Electrical and thermal.
What is a non-luminous object?
An object that doesn’t give off its own light and may appear bright because its surface reflects light from a luminous object.
What is an example of a non-luminous object?
Flashlight.
What is light from incandescence?
It’s when light is emitted when a substance has been heated to a very high temp.
What is an example of light from incandescence?
- Incandescent light bulb
2. Fuel burning technologies (torch, butane lamps for campers) - very inefficient
