What are the criminal courts ?

A

Magistrates court - minor offences and less serious offences, panel of lay magistrates or single district judge

Crown court - serious offences, indictable offences (murder rape etc)
Judge and jury

What are the civil courts

A

Magistrates courts- limited civil jurisdiction

County courts - NB - small claim track

High court - queens bench division (including the admiralty court and the commercial court)
Chancery division
Family division

Appeal courts

A

Court of appeal - 2 divisions (criminal and civil)
37 court of appeal judges known as lord justices usually sits in courts of 3 judges

Supreme Court - highest court in the land, 12 justices of the Supreme Court
Usually sits in courts of 5 judges
