Sound Waves PHYSICS Flashcards
What is needed to make a sound?
Vibrations
What is needed in the air to make sounds?
Molecules
What is the process of sound passing through our ears?
The vibrations make to eardrum vibrate and the vibrations are passed through to the small bones (OSSICLES) to the cochlea. Signals are then passed through from the cochlea to the brain from the auditory nerve.
What does amplitude determine?
The loudness of the sound
How is pitch displayed?
By the spacing out of the waves
WHat is frequency measured in?
Hertz (Hz)
How do you interpret oscilloscope traces?
Volume (amplitude ) shown by the height of the waves displayed
What is the frequency of a wave?
Wave frequency is the number of waves that pass a fixed point in a given amount of time.
What is the range of human hearing?
20Hz - 20,000 Hz
What is the equation when trying to find out what the speed is?
Speed = Distance
_______
Time
What are the names of the three small bones connected to the ear drum?
Malleus, Incus and Staples
What are the names of the to nerves that connect to the brain from the ear?
Cochlea nerve and
Vestibular nerve
What is the name of the thing that looks like a snail in your ear?
Cochlea
What part of the ear is the first thing to vibrate when vibrations enter the ear?
The eardrum
What is the outside of the ear called?
Pinna
What is the name of the tube that connects your ear to your throat?
Eustachian Tube
What is frequency?
Frequency is the number of vibrations per unit time.
Why can’t astronauts hear each other when they talk in space?
There are no air molecules so therefore no vibrations can be made in space.
What is an echo?
An echo is a sound that is repeated because the sound waves are reflected back
What is a ultrasound
An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of part of the inside of the body.
What is the range of an ultrasound?
20,000Hz +
What is the name of the canal that leads to the middle section of the ear?
Auditory Canal
Which does sound travel slower in solid, liquid or gases?
Gases
What is the wavelength of a wave?
The distance between the same two points on a wave
