Sound images and compression in binary Flashcards
What are factors that affect the file size of images?
colour depth and resolution
What factors affect the size of sound files
sample rate, bit depth and duration
What are 2 types of compression?
lossy and lossless
What is lossy compression?
This is where file size is reduced by removing some of the data compromising on quality
What is lossless compression?
This is where the original data is preserved by finding a different way to represent the file in binary this is not as effective as lossy but doesn’t compromise on quality.
What is colour depth?
Colour depth is where a colour is assigned a value in binary the more colours the more binary needed to store each colour.
What is resolution?
This is the number of pixels used to display an image
What is sample rate?
This is the frequency at which sounds are recorded in a sound file
What is bit depth in sound files?
The range and depth of sounds that a computer can detect the higher this is the more accurate the sound file becomes.
What is metadata?
Metadata is the data before a file that explains the parameters of a file e.g. bit depth sample rate resolution etc.
