Alliteration
Repetition of consonant sounds often at the beginning or endings of words. This technique can create a hard or soft effect depending on the letters used.
Sibilance
Use of consonants “s” and “z” to create a hissing sound.
Plosive
Pronounced with a sudden release of breath; b’s and p’s are plosive, they blow out the sound.
Assonance
Repetition of a vowel sound.
Onomatopoeia
The sound of the word resembles the sound of the object or action that it describes.
Rhyme
Matching of end words to create effects. Rhyme can be used in a variety of ways, check for alternate rhyme scheme or rhyming couplets.
Rhythm (beat or meter)
Patterns created by the word order. You may find iambic pentameter; a line of 10 syllables in which one unstressed syllable is followed by one stressed syllable. Find out what pattern the dactyl; trochaic and anapaest are.
