Structure
The pattern, shape or layout of the stanzas.
End stop
When the end of a line coincides with a normal pause dictated by sense, logic or punctuation.
Enjambment
When lines run on over to the next line or the next verse for particular effect or emphasis.
Punctuation
The way the poet uses punctuation to enhance the meaning or add emphasis or stress to a line.
Diction
Manner of enunciation; how the vocabulary and phrasing used convey the mood of personality of the speaker.
Tone
Similar to diction, it denotes the writers attitude to the subject.
Hyperbole
A deliberate over exaggeration or overstatement.
Pathetic fallacy
The state in which nature represents the emotions of the characters within the text.
Pathos
Where the writer provokes deep feelings of sadness, pity or sympathy in the reader. Excessive pathos can turn to sentimentality.
Allusion
A reference beyond the text and to another writer or text.
Speech, dialect
The use of direct speech in s regional non standard English adds emphasis and pathos to some poems.
