Sound and Ultrasound Flashcards
What type of wave are sound waves?
Longitudinal
What is sound caused by?
Vibrations in a medium.
Why can’t sound travel through a vacuum?
There are no particles in a vacuum to pass on the vibrations.
What matter of state does sound travel faster in? Why?
Solids; the particles are close together and pass on vibrations easily.
What does a higher amplitude do to a sound wave?
Increases its volume.
What does a higher frequency do to a sound wave?
Increases the pitch (higher pitch).
What is the range of human hearing?
20Hz to 20KHz; upper limit decreases with age.
What is ultrasound?
Sounds above 20KHz
What animals use ultrasound?
Bats and dolphins.
Name 3 things humans use ultrasound for.
Scanning soft tissue, pre-natal scanning, destroying kidney stones.
Name 3 industrial uses for ultrasound.
Cleaning delicate items, SONAR, checking for flaws in metal castings.
What are echoes?
Reflected sound waves.
