Sound and light Flashcards
What is sound?
Sound is a vibration and is a longitudinal wave
What is a wave?
A wave is a oscillation of vibration that transfers energy or information
What is a longitudinal wave?
A longitudinal wave moves backwards and forwards
What is a transverse wave?
A transverse wave moves up and down
What is superpositon?
Superposition is add up or cancel out
Out of solids, liquids and gases, which does sound travel the fastest through?
Sound moves fastest when the particles are closely packed together, so it moves fastest in solids
What is faster sound or light?
Light is faster because it is almost a million times faster than sound
What is an echo?
An echo is when sound reflects of a surface. Sound takes time to travel. There is time delay between making a sound and hearing an echo
How do you reduce reverberation?
By covering the walls with soft materials and putting carpets on the floor
How does a microphone work?
When a singer sings into a microphone the sound wave hits a flexible plate called a diaphragm. The diaphragm vibrates and the sound wave is carried
What is light?
Light is a radiation that can be seen with a human eye
