Anything that characters can hear & belongs in the diegesis

What is non diegetic sound?
Sound that doesn’t belong & is not generated inside the diegesis
What is an example of non diegetic sound?
Music & voice overs
What is contrapuntal sound?
Sound which does not fit the mood, look or the content of the visuals
What is an example of contrapuntal sound?
Jaws - happy music on beach when a shark is coming
What is parallel sound?
Sound that fits the mood, look & content of the visuals
What is an example of parallel sound?
Happy music at a fun fair
What is on screen sound?
Sound that you can see being generated on the screen
What is on screen sound always?
Diegetic
What is an example of on screen sound?
A robin tweeting with visual
What is off screen sound?
Sound that you can’t see being generated but you can hear it
What is an example of off screen sound?
A door slamming upstairs
What is wild tracking?
Sound recorded separately/ independently to the film or video shoot by a foley artist
What is a foley artist?
Someone who creates the sound which will later be edited into a scene
What is a sound bridge?
Where a noise or sound continues over a transition/ change from one shot to another
What is an example of a sound bridge?
The sound of the sea running over many scenes in the women in black, as Daniel Radcliffe walks through the women in blacks garden
What does a sound bridge do?
Helps engage viewers
Why are sound bridges used?
They make separate scenes into a show, which runs smoothly
