Sound Flashcards
What are the three perceptual properties of film sound?
Loudness, Pitch, and Timbre
What are the three types of sound in cinema?
Speech, Music, Noise
What does “futzing” the sound mean?
It’s a Hollywood term for manipulating sound electronically
What is sound mixing?
Selection and reworking of sounds to create a pattern that links events
What are the four dimensions of film sound?
Rhythm, Fidelity, Spatial, and Temporal
What are the properties of space?
Diegetic and Non-Diegetic
What are the two sub-properties of diegetic sound?
External and Internal
What are the properties of time?
Synchronous sound and Asynchronous sound
What is synchronous sound?
Sound that matches with image
What is Asynchronous sound?
Sound that is out of sync with image
What are the two properties of time manipulation?
Simultaneous sound and Non-simultaneous sound
What is sonic flashback?
Sonic flash back happens when we see a character in silent while we hear non diegetic sound inside the character’s head
What is loudness?
The volume of sound of the film
What is pitch?
The perceived highness or lowness of a sound (for example, a sound in a film shot at 10 fps is a lower pitch compared to another shot in 30 fps). In other word, speeding a video will make us sound like chipmunks.
What is timbre?
Harmonic components of sound, give it a certain color or tonal quality (for example, the difference between a piano and a violin playing the same notes)
What is simultaneous sound?
Sound that takes place at the same time as the image in terms of the story’s events. (For example, characters speaking on screen).
What is rhythm?
Is sound that occupies a duration; it involves a beat or pulse; a tempo or pace
What is fidelity?
A sound that is connected to its picture from any source. (For example, a we see a dog barking, and we hear that barking sound, is fidelity; but that barking noise can still be manipulated, meaning that barking noise may not even came from the same dog on picture).
What is spatial?
Refers to the conditions of space, where the sound originates from.
What is temporal?
Refers to sound relations to visual elements that take place in a specific time
What is diegetic sound?
Sound that has a source in the story world
What is non-diegetic sound?
Sound that has a source outside of the story world
What is external diegitic sound?
Sound that has a physical source in the scene
What is internal diegetic sound?
Sound from the inside the mind of the character
