What is Mizo-en-scene litteraly translated to?
“putting into scene”
What was the first application of mise-en-scene applied to?
It was applied to the practice of directing plays
What does realism do to our brain, what does it make us think?
Realism makes us easily compare to real life
What are the four aspects of Mizo-en-scene?
Setting, Costume and Make-up, Lighting, and staging
What is setting?
The place where the camera shoots
How would you describe setting?
Can overwhelm the actor
Can be reduced to nothing
Can use miniature set
Color
How would you describe Costume and Make-up
Costumes identify a character
Make-up was necessary because actors’ faces would not register on early film stock.
Define Lighting
Guides our attention to certain objects and actions.
What are the two basic shadows?
Attached/shading and Cast shadow
What is Attached/Shading?
Occurs when light fails to illuminate part of an object because of the object’s shape or surface feature
What is Cast Shadow
Projects a shadow on the wall behind it
What are the four major features of film lighting?
Quality, direction, source, color
What is quality lighting?
Quality is relative intensity of illumination
What is direction lighting?
Path of light from its source
What is color lighting?
Just color!
