Sound Flashcards
Waves
Waves are vibrations that transfer energy from place to place
What is sound?
Sound is a type of energy
Something has to move for sound to exist
All sound is caused by vibrations
Sound travels is waves
What can sound travel through?
Sound can travel through solids liquids and gases
Sound can travel through air and water
How is sound produced?
When an object vibrates it causes movement in the air particles
Particles bump into each other cussing vibrations
The vibrations keep going until they run out of energy.
Wavelength
Distance between two neighbouring crests or troughs of a wave
This is the distance between two particles vibrating in step
Amplitude
The maximum distance that a particle moves from its u disturbed position
Frequency
The number of times a sound wave repeats in a second
Pitch
The highness or lowness of a sound
High pitch
High pitch sounds have a low frequency, that means their sound waves vibrate quickly
Low pitch
Low pitch sounds have a low frequency, fewer waves per second
Difference between compression and rarefraction
Compression are closer together, and rarefaction are father apart
Pitch is determined by
The frequency of a sound
The frequency of a sound determines
It’s pitch
What type of wave does sound travel
Sound is transmitted as a compression wave
Sound mediums
Sound can travel through a medium that contains particles that can be forced closer together or gather apart
