Light Energy Flashcards
Non-luminous
Most objects that you see are non-luminous
Luminous
Emit light
Eg flame of a burning match
Opaque
Substances that absorb or reflect all the light striking them
Transparent
Most light travels through the substance
Translucent
Let just enough light through to enable you detect objects on the other side, but scatter so much light that you can’t see them clearly
Refraction
When light travels from one substance into another
Refraction causes light to bend
Plane mirriors
If a single light ray hits a plane mirror at an angle, it will bounce off - it will reflect at the same angle
Incident Ray
The Ray that hits the mirror is called the incident ray
Reflected Ray
The Ray that bounces off the mirror is called the reflected ray
Normal
The imaginary line that makes a 90 degree angle to the surface is called the normal
Concave mirror
In a concave mirror, light is reflected inwards and comes to a point.
Light rays are said to converge
Concave mirror image
The image is large and the right way up I’d the object if close to the mirror
Or
The image can be small and upside down if the object is away from the mirror
Example of concave mirror
Dentist mirrors
Convex mirror
In convex mirrors, light spreads out and so are said to diverge
The image is always smaller and the right way up
Concave mirrors are also known as
converging mirrors
