sound Flashcards
sound design
sound effects, microphones and music that does not break the immersion
music
playlist of songs for pre show, post show and intermission
copyright
does not apply to music played live
sound effects
sounds that range from identifiable sounds (doorbells, telephones, dog barks, etc) to unidentifiable sounds (crashes, bangs, bumps, etc)
sound reinforcement
usually only used in a production that is either a musical, or a play being produced in a large venue. refers to any method of controlling the volume, usually a microphone
nature of sound
a pressure wave that moves through the air and strikes/vibrates your ear. the brain interprets this as sound
frequency
hertz, higher pitched sounds are measured at a higher frequency
intensity
“volume”. objective (can sound different indoors and outdoors) and is measured in decibels
dynamic microphone
Jack of all trades microphone. good frequency response, suitable for onstage use and recording
condenser microphone
needs extra power (usually from battery), more sensitive and can pick up further away sounds (ex: choir)
mixer
signal routing, processing, and gain control. blends multiple sounds
stereo sound
surround sound (left and right sound)
processing
general term for different functions
equalization
making a sound balanced
delay
delaying a speaker so the audience will hear the sound at the same time
reverberation
essentially echo
compression
makes volume consistent. LOUD sounds are made quieter
gate
gets rid of sounds you don’t want to hear (usually quiet)
gain control
“sensitivity” of microphone
routing
mixer sending sound to a certain speaker
