Sound Flashcards
What is the definition of a sound
Sound is a longitudinal wave. It travels via compressions and rarefactions of particles in a medium.
Why does sound not pass through a vacuum
Because there is no particles for it to pass it on to.
Where does sound pass the quickest; solid, liquid or gas. Why?
Solid because the vibrations can pass through to the other particles more quickly.
What gets longer when sound speeds up?
The wavelength
What is in an ear that makes us hear a sound (all structures)
Ear canal, Ear drum, semicircular canals, auditory nerve, cochlea, ossicles (group of 3 bones).
What does a higher amplitude mean in sound waves
Higher volume/louder
What is the human hearing range
20 to 20000 Hz
What does frequency do to sound
Higher frequency results in a higher pitch while lower frequency creates a lower pitch
What does an do oscilloscope
An oscilloscope takes sound energy and converts it into electrical energy and draws the longitudinal sound wave as a transverse wave allowing us to see features such as amplitude and frequency.
