Sound Flashcards
How is sound produced..
By vibrations
Sound?…
A form of energy
What can sound travel through
It can travel through a solid, a liquid or a gas.
It can’t travel through a vacuum therefore it needs a medium to travel through (vacuum means no air )
Sound and light?…
Light can travel through a vacuum sound can’t.
Sound travels slower than light. This is why we see lightning before we hear thunder even though they happen at the same time.
Echo..
A reflection of sound.
Dolphins can communicate with each other and fishermen can find fish
Ultra sound
Sound above our level of hearing
How do we hear?…
Our ears detect sound vibrations in the air
Ear protection ?…
If people are working in a job where sound is above 70db (decibels) they have to wear ear protection.
Sounds made by vibration..
Diaphragm of a speaker vibrates, you can feel the air being pushed out.
A guitar or violin string will vibrate when plucked.
Holding a ruler firmly at the end and bending it at the other causes vibrations that can be seen.
A medium is
A solid a liquid or a gas
Sound intensity level?..
The loudness of the sound is called intensity level
Sound intensity unit?..
Sound intensity is measured in decibels
Sound level meter?…
Used to measure the loudness of a sound in decibels
