Sound Flashcards
Sound
Sound is produced when..
when an object vibrates, creating a pressure
Sound travels in…
longitudinal waves
Lower frequencies sound
Lower in pitch
Higher Frequencies are….
Higher in pitch
How do Musical Instruments make sound?
Musical instruments create sounds by making something vibrate. For eg. guitars make sound when their strings vibrate. Most instruments are “tuned” to make a range of sounds of particular frequencies, which we call notes.
Wavelength
The distance/length between the crests of the wave (the pointy bits at the top of the wave or the highest parts of the wave)
Amplitude
The distance between the middle line and the top of the wave (just search it up if ur confused)
Lower amplitude means…
that it sounds Quieter
Higher amplitude means…
That it sounds louder
The equation for speed
Speed= distance divided by time Time= Distance divided by speed Distance= speed x time
Rarefraction
The Reduction of an item’s density
Smaller Musical instruments…
Produce higher-pitched notes
Larger instruments…
Produce lower-pitched notes
Why do ships often use echoes? SONAR - SOund, Navigation And Ranging
So they can find out how deep the ocean is beneath them or to detect shoals of fish 🐟🐟
Sound can not…
Travel through a vacuum
