Soul Mind and Body Flashcards
Plato (3)
Dualist
1) Things came about through opposites
2) We can use reason to work out things we haven’t been taught
3) your sense of self is constant whilst everything around you changes - soul completely unchanging
Aristotle
Body and soul have seperate labels but can’t exist without one an other
Everything has a soul just different types
Matter has potentiality (it can become something)
Form has actuality (is has become something)
Soul is a form of the body
Aquinas
Body= material and corruptible Soul= not
Humans could exist without body animal souls could not
Soul must be reunited with body by God after death
Descartes
Substance Dualist
“I think therefore i am”
Our senses misleading- only thing we can be sure of is that we are thinking
Ryle
Mind and body intrinsically linked
Said Descartes made a “category error”
trying to compare mind and body as they are the same thing
Dawkins
Materialist
Humans made up of only physical attributes
No such thing as mind or soul that’s seperate to the body as a whole
“that walk was good for my soul”
However Dawkins did not educate himself enough on the shoulder before critiquing it
