Arguments based on reason (ontological) Flashcards
Ontological argument
A priori logic nit experience
Anselm
“faith seeking and understanding”
“the fool says in his heart ‘there is no god’”
- God is that which nothing greater can be conceived (thought of)
- if God could only exsist in the mind he wouldnt be the greatest being
- Gods existence is necessary and not contingent
Descartes
God is perfect. Existence is a perfection. God must exsist.
Existence can’t be separated from god as triangle can’t be seperate from 3 sides
Gaunillio
Critiqued anselm- argument is absurd - just cause you think of an island doesn’t mean it exists
Just defining something as perfect doesn’t make it exist
Name of descartes book
meditations
Anselms response to Gaunilo
Ontological argument only works for God as God exists necessarily and an island exists contingently
Kants criticism of descartes
“existence is not a predicate”
has no meaning, the fact i exist does not tell you anything about my characteristics
Russel
Statements about the attributes of God are only meaningful if there is an actual God.
