Explain the Red Scare, Sacco and Vanzetti, and the Palmer Raids.

A

Red Scare:
When people that were scared of reds spreading to the US.(Communist/Socialist/Anarchist)

Sacco and Vanzetti: They were 2 Italian Anarchists who were arrested for stealing from a man. It showed bias. (Gov was scared of reds)

Palmer Raids: Raids led by the government that arrested suspected people of being reds.

What is Fundamentalists vs Evolutionists and the Scopes Monkey Trial?

A

Fundamentalists: People who believed strictly in the bible and god vs. Evolutionists: People who believed Darwin’s theory that all life forms evolved from lesser life forms.

Scopes Monkey Trial: When a teacher was arrested for teaching evolution and not creationism. The South was very religious.

A

Bootlegger/Gangster: People who smuggled alcohol.

Speakeasy: a hidden underground bar.

Prohibition: It banned alcohol and caused outrage. Americans would secretly drink, smuggle, and caused a rise in gangs, mafia, crime.

Supported Prohibition: Leads to violence, abuse, effects women and children. A lot of women supported prohibition.

Against Prohibition: Overstep of the government, gov shouldnt control that and americans want to drink and culturally a lot of people are accustomed to drinking.

21st amendment: Unbanned alcohol.

Buying on margin: When you buy a loan to be used to invest into stocks.

Installment Plans: paying a down payment and then paying the rest weekly/monthly

Mass Production: Using Assembly lines (Each person was assigned a different job that they did repeatedly, slowly assembling a certain product.) to make items cheaper and faster.

Henry Ford: The person who made the Model T automobile.

Consumerism: Big economic boom, leads to people being irresponsible with money, big loans, overspending, ppl buying more things, Installment plans.

Return to Normalcy: Harding saying to return the U.S. to normal. No more war/death. Response to WWI.

Ohio Gang: President Harding brought in his friends to work in his administration in the white house. They were all crooks, and dishonest.

Teapot Dome Scandal: Person from the Ohio Gang that sold land and oil rights from the government to make money for himself.

Harlem Renaissance: A period in history when black culture, arts, literature exploded. Be sure to acknowledge the key figures of the era.-louis armstrong, langston hughes, Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington. also showed hope.

KKK: The KKK changed from hating black people to hating immigrants. They used intimidation and violence.

Xenophobia: Fear/hatred of immigrants.

Quota Acts: Only allowed 3% of people from each country to immigrate to the U.S. (Pushed to 2% later) Against Immigration.
