SOPEP Flashcards
What does SOPEP stand for?
Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan
Where do you find the requirements for SOPEP?
MARPOL Annex 1, Regulation 37
What are the 2 main purposes of SOPEP?
1- Provide guidance to the master and officers on board the ship with respect to the steps to be taken when an oil pollution incident occurs OR IS LIKELY TO OCCUR
2- Contains all information and operational instructions as required by the IMO
3 Primary objectives of SOPEP
1- Prevention of oil pollution
2- Stop or minimize oil outflow in the event of damage
3- Stop or minimize oil outflow in the event of a spill
What are the 4 primary pieces of information the SOPEP plan provides?

2- Coastal and port contacts in the event of an incident
3- Response actions in the event of an incident
4- Coordination with national and local authorities
what are your 6 initial priorities according to SOPEP

6- Slick movement
7- Assistances required
— (Salvage, lightening, capacity, mechanical equipment, external strike team, chemical dispersants/degreasant
Navigational measures to control discharge in the event of a spill
1- Alter course, position and/or speed 2- Change of list/trim 3- Anchoring 4- Setting aground 5- Initiate towage 6- Asses safe haven requirements 7- Weather, tide and swell forecasting 8- Slick monitoring 9- Record actions and communications taken
Seamanship measures in the event of a spill
1- Safety assessment and precautions
2- Advice on priority counter and preventative measures
3- Ballasting/deballasting
