Baroque keyboard suite
Paired movements in the same or related keys, thematic consistency, and binary form. An important genre leading to tonal stability in late Baroque.
Differences between “sonata da chiesa” and “sonata da camera”
names of movements
sonata da chiesa (church sonata) - Largo, Allegro, etc
sonata da camera (chamber sonata) - Dance names - Gigue, etc
trio sonata
4 performers - typically 2 violins and continuo (bass and keyboard)
solo sonata
3 performers - one treble instrument (violin) accompanied by continuo (bass and keyboard)
concerto grosso
three featured soloists (concertino) inermittenty accompanied by a group of string isntruments (ripieno)
fortspinnung
a segment of music after a cadence where phrases move into nearby keys which unfold the basic idea “spinning out”
corelli clash
simultaneous sounding of leading tone and tonic pitches at the point of cadential closure
