Exposition
First large section of the sonata
First tonal area
Initial part of the exposition; is in the tonic key
Second tonal area
Second section of the exposition; material from the exposition is presented in a contrasting key
Recapitulation
First tonal area returns with the original material
Development
Digression the FTA goes through before the end of the sonata
Sonata principle
Material (usually from the STA) presented at the end of the first section returns at the end of the piece in the tonic key
Transition
Seven measure passage that leads to the STA
Dependent transition
Begins with a restatement of the initial theme from the FTA
Independent transition
Uses new thematic material
Medial caesera
The pause that very often occurs between the end of the transition and the beginning of the STA and that marks the approximate midpoint of the exposition
Retransition
Final area of the development, where the dominant prepares the return of the tonic in the recapitulation
Coda
Appear at end of recapitulation
Codettas
Occur at end of exposition
Monochromatic sonata form
Same theme used in the FTA and the STA
