General characteristics of a fugue
A
- Imitative exposition, in which a subject presented by one voice is imitated by each of the other voices at the fifth
- Contains many episodes, modulatory passages with a developmental character, usually sequential and based on the ascending or descending circle of fifths, after which the subject may be stated by a single voice (middle entry) or by several voices in imitation (middle entry group)
- Modulations or strings of modulations are to closely related keys
- Stretto: Imitation of the subject at a closer metrical distance than the original imitation
