Where is Somerset located?
South West England.
When did it happen?
December 2013 to January 2014, but worse flooding from the 24th to 27th of January.
How many rivers are nearby?
Two rivers.
What caused the flood?
Drop of 21 degrees in the Summer to 2 degrees in the Winter, 97% of January rainfall in 15 days, only 10 to 12 feet above the sea level so 5,400 properties were at high risk.
What was the prior planning to the event?
Drains were built, artificial rivers to divert water made, around 70 pumping stations.
How many houses were flooded?
600
What area of agricultural land was effected?
17,000 acres or 6,900 hectares.
How many houses had internal flooding?
165
What areas were effected?
North Moor, Greylake, and the village of Thorney was evacuated.
How many sand bags were ready to be deployed by the 10th of February?
20,000
What was short term national and international aid?
Food supplies were brought in through used boats and the navy, and pumps brought in from the Netherlands.
How much money was supplied for aid?
£30 million
What long term responses were implemented?
Dredge the river, plant trees, more pumping stations to be built, barrages and earth-banks built to protect Bridgewater.
