what is a Gana ragam ?

A

this raga lends itself to singing or playing an instrument in the vilamba , madhyma and duritha kalam. There is also scope for much improvisation. Nattai, goulai, arabi , varali and Sri ragam are called Gana panchaga ragas.

what are naya ragams?

A

It lends itself to elaborate alapanai.
-can also be sung in three sthayis and gives much scope for improvisation
E.g kalyani and sankarabaranam

A

lends itself to being sung with foreign ragas taking their flavour.

A

The 72 melekarthas ragas and janna ragas derived from them are suddha ragas (taken only one type from swarm)

what are chayalaka ragam ?

A

theres shades of foreign ragas in this raga. they are known as salaka raga and salanga raga.
Eg. sowrashtam -certain places shaded of sakaravakam
-saranga- certain places shades of kalyani appear.

what are sankeerna ragas?

A

raga contains the sancharas of several ragas in a large measures.
also known as Misra raga and sangrama raga.
e.g. dwijavanthi and ahri.

what are mithra ragas ?

A

ending of all these ragas will be the same.
E.g. gowlai,reethi gowlai , kedara gowlai, narayana gowlai , kannada gowlai, mayamalavagowlai.
E.g. karaharapriya , shanmukapriya , ramapriya
E.g. ranjani, sriranjini,manoranjani.
