Some groups in society are more affected by inequalities. Discuss. Answer with reference to a group you have studied. (Elderly). Flashcards
how many pensioners where in material deprivation in 2017 ?
800,000 pensioners where in material deprivation according to the UK Department of Work and Pensions survey
why is living in material deprivation bad ?
it is incredibly stressful for older people as they are worrying about paying bills and having to pay more for food/essentials
social exclusion leads to loneliness but what is it and how many older people face this
loneliness is a devastating feeling of being alone. 3.6 million pensioners live on their own and 200,000 of them reported having no conversation in a month
why is loneliness bad ?
it effects mental health causing downwards spirals in come occasions, reducing the quality of life.
what is fuel poverty and how much of single pensioners in the UK are effected by this
fuel poverty is when you have to spend more than 10% of your household income on fuel. 58% of single pensioners in the UK are effected by fuel poverty.
why is fuel poverty especially bad for pensioners ?
as they are frailer and more likely to spend more time at home they need to spend more on heating their home. Single women are more effected by this as they live longer thus living alone after being widowed
fuel poverty causes stress, Age UK found that ???
Age UK found that over 90% of over 60’s were worried about rising fuel costs
so why is rising fuel costs bad for those in poverty ??
being in poverty itself is bad for your health (poor housing and shit) so being ill while in poverty means needing to spend more on fuel as it leads to more time at home.
how many elderly in poor housing in the UK currently ?
currently around 2 million elderly in substandard housing in the UK.
what is substandard housing ?
housing with poor insulation, worn out roofing and damp all which effect the residents health.
however …!!!!!!!
many elderly own their own home which means they dont need to worry about rent and property upkeep, they just worry about making sure their housing is NOT substandard.
how many of the ‘Baby Boomer’ generation own their own homes ?
almost 3/4 own their own home (meaning not having to pay a mortage) up from just over half in 1993
so is poor housing universal ?
NO!!! because not everyone experiences it as Boomer generations bought houses when they were affordable
many elderly who live alone don’t eat that well, how many people aged 65 and over aren’t getting adequate nutrition ?
around 1.3 million people aged 65 and over are not getting enough calories or protein in their diet
why is this bad ????!?!!?!?
eating is vital to good health as not getting sufficient nutrients can lead to frailty thus making them easier to get injured.
