somatropin Flashcards
what is the pharmacotherapeutic (use) for somatropin?
used as long-term replacement (in children) of inadequate endogenous GH secretion.
stimulates linear growth resulting in skeletal growth.
what is the classification of somatropin?
anterior pituitary hormone
how is somatropin administered?
SQ or IM
what is the contraindications for somatropin?
growth promotion in children with closed epiphyses.
what are the adverse effects of somatropin?
HA, HTN, joint and back pain, peripheral edema, muscle aches, and rhinitis. usually resolve when dose adjustment is complete.
what are the drug interactions of somatropin?
anabolic steroids, androgens, estrogens, or thyroid hormones may accelerate epiphyseal maturation.
what are the health status, life span/gender, lifestyle/diet/habits & environment of somatropin?
- assess medical Hx & C/I to drug
- preg cat C
- assess ability to adhere to medical regimen. Injections given at night to mimic the natural growth curve that occurs after sleep.
- assess environment where drug will be given. family or pt & reconstitution of med is crucial. refrig afterwards.
what are the maximizing therapeutic effects of somatropin?
- hypothyroidism may develop during therapy
- pts who require chronic peritoneal dialysis shoild receive their doses of somatropin in the morning, after dialysis is completed.
how to minimize the adverse effects of somatropin?
- GH therapy may induce insulin resistance
- be alert for the development of a limp or complaints of hip or knee pain, and tell the parents to do the same.
what are the patient/family education of somatropin?
- explain that this drug is replacing an important hormone (GH)
- explain proper administration of medication
what are the ongoing assessment and evaluation of somatropin?
evaluate thyroid function at regular intervals because hypothyroidism compromises rGH drug effects
